How to Properly Store Your Cheese at Home

At The Cheese Wedge, we want every wedge, wheel, and slice you bring home to taste just as incredible as the day you bought it. The key? Proper storage! Whether you’re stocking up on a favourite cheddar, splurging on a creamy brie, or experimenting with something new, here’s how to keep your cheese fresh and flavourful for as long as possible.

1. Say No to Plastic Wrap

While it’s tempting to tightly wrap cheese in plastic wrap, it can suffocate the cheese, trapping moisture and leading to faster spoilage. Instead, wrap your cheese in wax paper or parchment paper, then place it loosely in a reusable bag or container. This allows the cheese to breathe while protecting it from drying out.

2. Use the Cheese Drawer (or Make Your Own)

Cheese prefers a slightly humid environment with consistent temperature. Your fridge’s cheese or vegetable drawer is perfect. If you don’t have one, create your own by placing wrapped cheese in a container with a lid—it helps mimic that ideal environment.

3. Store Different Cheeses Separately

Strong-smelling cheeses can share their aroma with milder varieties if stored together. Keep blue cheeses, washed-rinds, and pungent varieties in their own containers to avoid flavour mingling.

4. Keep Hard Cheeses Fresher Longer

Firm cheeses like parmesan or aged gouda naturally last longer. To extend their life even more, wrap them properly and keep them in the coldest part of the fridge (usually near the back).

5. Handle Soft Cheeses with Care

Soft cheeses like brie, camembert, and fresh chèvre are more delicate. Keep them in their original wrapping if possible, or switch to parchment and store them in a breathable container. Aim to enjoy them within a week or so of purchase.

6. Don’t Be Afraid to Trim

If you notice a little surface mould on a hard cheese, don’t panic—it’s often safe to simply cut away about 1 cm around the affected area and enjoy the rest. Soft cheeses, however, should be discarded if mould appears (unless it’s part of the cheese, like blue!).

7. Bring Cheese to Room Temperature Before Serving

Cold cheese doesn’t show off its full flavour or texture. For the best experience, take your cheese out of the fridge 30–60 minutes before serving.

Final Tip: Buy in Manageable Quantities

The freshest cheese is the one you’ll eat soon! Instead of buying too much at once, visit us regularly at The Cheese Wedge to restock and discover something new each time.

With just a little extra care, your cheese will stay fresher, longer—and taste even better when it hits your plate.
